South Store Report - 14 Oct

There was an excellent selection of rifles there today.

Many Field Grades, both SA & HRA in great shape; much better overall condition that I've seen before. I looked at two HRAs. Both had USGI walnut stocks with no cracks, chips or medium or larger gouges; just minor dings & dents. Both barrels went 3 for MW; one went 3 for TE & the other 4. Bores VG-ex. With a slight nudge, I don't see why they were not Service Grades. Great bargains.

Many Rack Grades & woodless rack grades.

About 20 Barvarian Police Service grade carbines + some Rack grades. All seemed to have the adjustable rear sight.

    A few Krags, ersatz carbines.

A few M44s sans trigger guards & other parts.

About 20 "Service Grade Specials" These had all USGI parts, including the barrel, plus a new CMPicon stock. All were SA made in S/N ranges 5.4, 5.7 & 5.8. All were original finish, 98%, with wear just on sharp edges. All metal appeared unissued; slight to no wear on the finish on the bolt lugs; bolt face; follower and, on the one I pulled the TG assembly from, no wear on the hammer face & the lugs were perfect. I checked the MW on all; all ran between 1 & 2. TE on the one I checked was 2. The barrel dates all appeared to match the receiver. An SA 5.79 rifle had a bbl date of 1-55, a bolt with a heat lot number of A15. All parts were SA. These Service Grade Specials look to be correct. Price is $795 which is a bit more that the price of a Service Grade + the $150 new CMP stock; since the metal is all matching & unissued, these may be a great deal, especially if you have a mid '50s stock set sitting around. The CMP stock has a slim grip, is well porortioned, well finished and fits the receiver very tight. Good job CMP!

For in store purchase only, they had 240 rd spam cans, 5 bandoliers, in clips (apparently at least some USGI saw some SA, BRW, PEW & MBZ; all were smoothly finished, not like the Greek clips). Vintage was HXP-62. $94/can.

I'm looking forward to my next trip (in early December). I wish I lived closer.

    Thanks for the report.
