K98 Barrel and Rear Sight Swap

Does anyone here have experience or know the tools and procedures to remove a K98 barrel, remove the rear sight, put the rear sight on a new K98 barrel and then put the new barrel on the K98? I have a mint K98 barrel to replace my shot out Steyr barrel and am hoping to make it a do it yourself job. Thanks for any advice.

you will need the right tools. barrel vise, and action wrench.
the sight base is high temp soldered on, and will need to be heated off.
a propane torch will not get it hot enough to flow.
you can get silver solder at Brownells, they sell the tools as well.

98 barrels can be extremely tight. Unless you are planning on making a business out of it you would be better off letting a pro who has already invested in the tools handle the job.

It's not that you couldn't do it but I helped a friend do one once and it was a first class b*tch!

This job is strictly for a pro. Many gunsmiths can't/won't attempt the job. Too many shop hours on a a milsurp. Once the customer gets the estimate he is usually gone. Cheaper to find a nice Kar98 with a good barrel. The many Yugo 98's on the market are still quite cheap.

It can be done at home and as Chuck stated you will need the right tools, if you have some basic engineering skills i suggest getting a copy of the NRA gunsmithing book lots of good info, and has tools that you can make which you would need for the barrel swap.
I have done a few and the ones i have done, the sight base were lead soldered, last one was a portuguese mauser that i used a k98 barrel to replace the original, which required some machine work and had to be rethreaded.
As i,m in the uk it was the only option.
Have a look on the restorers section under portuguese mauser, i posted it in 2 parts it may give an idea of the work involved minus the lathe work etc.
