    They definitely.............

Were Officers tableware. Not used in the EM mess. I don't have a clue as to time period, but would guess during WWII. They were marked USN, so the mess stewards couldn't steal them and pawn them off !!

They appear to be stainless steel in the pics. I would hazzard to guess that real silver pre-dated WWII time period. Unless it was the Admirals Flag Ship.

    FWIW,

    Emri

Appreciate the reply. I had never put a magnet to them, but the one that is turned up, with the small U.S.iconN. is magnetic and is stainless. Also, it is not maker marked. The one shown in the picture below has a different U.S.N., and is not magnetic. It is maker marked International Silver Co., so must be silver plate.

    Johnny,

The regular mess used a plain, classic pattern for tableware. the older ones I've seen were 'german silver" with real silver plate. Some time mid-century this was changed to stainless. they were all stamped "U.S.iconN."

I was USCG but we used USN tableware, coffee cups, dishes, etc.

A yardbird once told me: "see where that thing is stamped USN? That means it belongs to us'n."

I would place the time period before WW 2. I recently picked up some similar Navy silverware.
My every day use silverware is a mix of USN, US & USMD marked stuff, mostly what I swiped out of the mess halls in the 1950s & 60s.
