Get two pieces of soft lead. If you are doing a .30 cal barrel, 00 buckshot will work. If you dont have that, two .38 cal wadcutters will do if you cut them in half. Lightly lubricate each piece. Take 1 piece and place it on the muzzle, makng sure the lead is larger than the bore. Using a piece of hardwood, tap the lead into the bore until it is flush with the muzzle. Take a cleaning rod and, from the breach, tap the lead out. It will be engraved with the rifling; you can measure the lands & grooves with a caliper. Take the second piece & drop it in the chamber. With a wooden dowel or plastic rod, tap in into the the rifling ahead of chamber throat about .5". This place is called the leade. Tap it out from the muzzle with the cleaning rod. You now can measure the dimensions of your muzzle & leade.
