I can't stand the smell of BLOicon and don't know anything about gunnys paste but I refinished my M1icon with Formby's Tung Oil. It doesn't take as long or is as messy as BLOicon and you can reduce the shiny finish between coats with a light buffing with very fine steel wool.

yesterday, shooting at the range, my m1a type 308, just having finished it up with the Fairtrimmers, no other finishes or sanding, another shooter came over to my bench and looked at the rifle, and talked about the finish, he really liked the color and finish san that is the ifrest time anyone has ever been interested to know what type of finish I had put to a rifle.
