HOW TO MAKE 8.15 X 46R CASES FROM 30/30 CASES

    Deprime and clean the cases.

Trim the cases to 1.81" (check your chamber length, may be different)

    Anneal the case necks.

Size them in a .32/40 or 8.15 X 46R die without expanding the case necks. Just size the cases enough so that they will go into the rifle chamber.

Prime and load the cases with 5 grains of Unique, then fill them with Cream of Wheat with a smear of grease on top to hold the whole cartridge together. No bullet!

Fire the cases in your rifle.

Sometimes several expansion firings are needed.

Trim again to the correct length for your rifle.

Sometimes formed .30/30 cases of the right length won't go in the 8.15 X 46R gun because the rim is too thick or because the rim diameter is too large. It is easy to misunderstand why the case won't go in the chamber!!

    The .30/30 rim diameter is .506". The 8.15 X 46R rim diameter is .486".

If the rim diameter is too large for your rifle, then file or cut the rim to the correct diameter.

If the rim thickness is too great for your rifle, then file or cut either the base of the case or the forward edge of the rim. The forward edge of the rim can be filed using a file with a safe edge. If you file or cut the base of the case, then you may have reduced the primer pocket depth so that the primer protrudes beyond the base of the case, which is unacceptable. Finagling may be required.

    Bob,

Here's what Ken Howell says about the dimensions of the 8.15x46 R. The figures given are CIP maximums.

    Rim diam. - .4862"
    Rim thickness - .0591"
Diam. just in front of rim - .4232"
From front edge of rim To start of shoulder - 1.1811"
    Diam. at shoulder - .3898"
From front of rim to start of neck - 1.5748"
    Diam. of neck - .3476"
    O.A. case length - 1.8307"

Nonte gives the following dimensions in his book.

    Rim diam. - .506"
    Head diam. - .421"
    Neck diam. - .346"
    Case length - 1.815"

Nonte's book says to make them from .30/30 cases. I used .32/40 cases as that's what I had the most of. Nonte mentions thinning the rim thickness & diam. if necessary, but I found in my rifle I didn't have to do that. After trimming to length if an 8.15x45 R FL die is not available run them into a .32/40 die and fireform.

On checking the groove dim. you'll find a diam. anywhere from .315" to .318".

The 8.15x46R is comparable to our .32-40 WCF. It was used primarily as a schutzen or target round. It was commonly loaded with a lead bullet & black powder; later smokeless. It can often be found in antique single shot target rifles. It was not commonly chambered in rifles intended for hunting; accuracy was its strong suite, not energy. Velocity was about 1000-1200 fps.

Badger gave you instructions how to make it. It has almost the same base & rim dimensions as the .30-30 so that case can be used to make the 8.15x46R
