    A timely announcement

    In the L.A. Times.

There were five mini-subs launched to attack Pearl Harbor at the same time as the aerial bombers. Up until recently, only four were accounted for:
    1) Sunk by Destroyer USS Ward in the security zone outside the harbor. Found intact a few years back.

    2) Made it into the harbor but was depth-charged and sank. Dredged up in '41 and was reburied in concrete in the '50s.

    3) Ran out of battery power and washed up on the shore. Resides at the Nimitz Museum in Texas.

    4) Suffered mechanical failure and was sunk.

And now, #5 has been found. She was the only one to radio back to her mother sub a success signal. It is thought that the sub made it into the harbor and fired its two torpedoes with one striking and damaging the battleship U.S.iconS. Oklahoma. She was apparently scuttled in the harbor. A huge ammunition explosion occurred over the site during the war. The site was dredged and all foreign objects were dragged out and sunk at sea. Modern-day explorers went out and found the remains of the sub in that debris and determined that her torpedo tubes were empty. Salvage teams had found one torpedo hit on Oklahoma that was too large to have been caused by an aerial torpedo and found one missed torpedo that was too large to be an aerial torpedo.

So, another chapter appears to be closed.
