Thanks for all the input, made the seller an offer based on it being a decent looking made up sporter which was refused.
You all have helped me learn a lot about the NRA sporters so if I ever stumble on another I should be able to make an informed decision.

if you have deap pockets, i have listed my complete spare NRA sporter stock set on Ebay...just do a ebay search for NRA Sporter..youll find it...
warning...it aint cheap.....but when is the last time you saw a complete set for sale??that wasnt a repro.

The barrel has the remains of the hole for the rear sight fixed base pin , so the barrel is probably not the original since they did not have the fixed base. Could this have been bought as an action only?

you are mistaken...though they didnt have the witness pin,. they could be orderd with a rear sight base sleeve,,mine came that way..and is on the list.

That serial number is in the midst of several NRA Sporters on my SRS information but is NOT listed. Chuckindenver may have a later SRS book. The stock appears to be a cut down C type stock. The NRA Sporter stocks were cut square on the butt. The inletted place on the top of the butt would not be on an NRA Sporter stock. The NRA Sporter barrels normally do not have the rear sight sleeve. Chuckindenver's NRA Sporter with the issue type rear sight is the only one I have heard of that had that type rear sight. My seven NRA Sporters and the 20 or so others I have handled do not have the keyway for the rear sight base.

I thought that I read some source that indicated that in the hayday of the 'sporter', the sporter stock could be ordered inletted for the standard barrel less the rear sight base and also inletted for the base.
Do not remember the source. Crossman perhaps?

let me clear this up..
my rifle doesnt have the sight base keyway..
it does have the conture for the sight base, and the stock was cut for same.
this sporter was modified so bad, drilled, stock shortened, ect, that i turned it into a .257R. and used the barrel for a NM project i have,
a sight base slid right on with no issues..the barrel however is a tad heaveier then a standard issue barrel, and i had to open a bayonet lug and stock so it would fit right.

Hi, I ended up buying this beast. All is true except can I confirm that the serial number is listed as a NRA sporter? The serial number is 1270253.

It does look like the barrel and bolt were polished then blued. Nice rifle regardless.
