    USMC Rebuild--Sight Cover Question

My 6/41 Segley barrel rebuild RI 03 has no front sight cover. Looks like the original sight cover was ripped off by a rabid bear--scratches on the front sight ring. Would it be worthwhile to get an original USMC thick cover for restoration, or did the rebuild remove all the old style covers???

Dear Sir: Unless you have the taller USMC front sight, a standard front sight cover will be appropriate and a lot cheaper. The USMC covers I have seen advertised run about $70. Regards, H.T.

The rebuild removed all the old style thick USMC sight covers.

    Hope this helps.

If your going to shoot it, you probably won't like the regular sight covers. They crowd the top of your sight blade and make for a poor sight picture. My 2 cents.

The USMC large front sight cover makes a great sunshield and doesn't interfere with the sight picture like the original cover does. It works well with the original smaller front sight blade. It is worth the $75 if you are shooting in the sunshine.

I'm too old to shoot decent scores with open/post sights anymore! Here's the REALLY good news: I called a friend with a few 03's, and he said he had a non USMC cover he would sell me for $20. Kinda steep, but we both knew Numrich was out of them(we occasionally shoot with Bill who works the counter at Gunparts). So I got the thing, and as I oiled it up a bit, there was the faint circle S stamp! It was a Sedgley hood---just the thing for the Sedgley barrel. Life is gooood again. Now to see what I can get for the rifle at the Middletown show....next week.

Wassat head banging?? Hey, I'm not of the collector type---if I can't shoot it in my 1000 yd matches, or hunt with it, I don't need it! Better to sell it to someone who collects. On the other hand, I could put a Timney trigger and Krieger 29" 308 1 in 13" twist barrel on it and shoot Palma....naaa, I already built a Palma rifle that got me a Master classification....but I shoot F class, now.
