A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Roughly 6 million carbines made. The magazine, like most others, was considered 'expendable'. Empty mags dropped in battle probably were not recovered, but that's guesswork. Still, I imagine the target quantity was probably more like 100 per carbine, or 600 million - maybe a billion. There are guys here who are knowledgeable in contracts for some items - maybe they have an educated guess. Then of course you have the thirty-rounders that were in use until the carbine was finally taken out of service. They had to have bought at least a few million of those too.

I don't know how true my info. might be, but I've been told by several collecters that the contract that each maker made with the War Department was 20 mags per. weapon. 12,200,000 plus. I wish there were more. Bob.
