Guns were sidelined on a regular basis for on-line faults and diverted to a rectification or hospital bay. If the gun could be made serviceable all well and good, it was sent on its way at the relevant place on the production line so to speak. Some of those that could only be made serviceable with selectively fitted parts were skeletonised by apprentices or made into the earliest DP guns while others had an A suffix added to the serial number as in H-1234/A as an indication of this to Armourers

So if you have one with an A suffix, that's the reason. If you have a ZZ suffix to the serial number, then that's something else. And DPB, then that's something else too!

I also just bought a MK1 tripod S/N: A.557.41. AGE It was missing the lower section of the A.A. leg, I fabricated one to replace it.

    Bren gun - Enfield MK 1 1941

Hi mine is P908 - I think dates to late 1941 -December. All matching numbers apart from a lithgow barrel dated feb 1943 serial number 7712

So I guess it saw service with Australianicon troops at some point?

    Cheers

Mick, I've replied to your PM.

P908 would be a very late 41 gun, does the gun have an FTR/52 or similar marking? And does it have any MA, BA, OA markings on any of the smaller parts? Also it may be in an almost unissued state.

If it does, then the gun has been in Aus, if not, and the gun has been used, then there's a good chance the barrel is one of the second barrels from the Aussie imports of the 1990s. Each of those Brens came with a CES including the second barrel which couldn't be deactivated on its own so some of these have sat around for years waiting to be used on what ever parts came along.

    Any chance of some photos?

Hi - will try to add pictures today. It is in excellent condition with some signs of use. It does have MA on smaller parts such as the bipod - which has the correct extendable legs.
    Cheers
