1911 barrel markings

Trying to figure out info on a barrel I got in a parts lot. Has two very small stamps an top of chamber. I THINK they are a P and H. Underneath chamber in front of lug? there is the number 5 and another partial stamp but I don't want to guess at it. It looks to be originally blued but not a lot of finish left. Anyway to place a date of manufacture? WWII? Or a good site to help me get along. Thanks, Mike

You have a Colt 1911 Barrel and depending on the arrangement of the HP, it could be any one of about three different configurations. These three different barrels would each be at a different serial number range.

If you go to http://www.coolgunsite.com and check out the different barrels for comparison, I'm sure that you can narrow your barrel down to the exact vintage.

Your barrel is for a early Colt. Depending how the HP is stamped will determine the serial number range. If the stamped H P spaced apart this would be s/n range 25,000 to 120,000. If stamped with the HP turned 90 degrees than 110,000 to 425,000. With the HP interlaced where the right leg of the H is the post for the P than s/n 400,000 to 710,000. There is an over lap in the s/n ranges.

OK, so heres the good news - The H and P on my barrel is exactly like the barrel pictured on the web sight, figure 1a, WWI Colt Military, SN 120,000 - 400,000. It also has the number 5 stamped in front of the lugs like figure 7b. It also has a partial G (government) stamp low and left of the 5. It would be larger than the 5 if whole. The website said the G stamp did not appear until around 710,000. Any guesses on that?

Now, the bad news. Since the barrel had little original finish, some rust and light pitting, I decided to "clean it up". It now has zero finish, except for the 2 coats of oxpho-blue I just put on it! The bore and chamber looks very good for its age with no pitting. So given the current condition of the barrel, whats it worth? Does it have any collector value? Thanks for all your help guys, 1911's aren't my thing and I'm still learning!
