    M1912/61 Steyr Chilean Mauser

I just purchased a M1912/61 Steyr Chileanicon Mauser from a guy in CO. Apparently, these rifle were made between 1912-14 on a rock solid 98 action. They were fitted w/ surplus 03 Spingfield 2 groove barrels in the early 60's. The barels had the threads cut off, re=threaded /chambered it and gave them the mauser contours. The actions wetre left in the white, and some the barrels were painted. They said it's safe for modern loads and they are pretty accurate. Does anybody have any information or experience with these? Thanks

    Hi concretus,

Do you mean the 7.62 Nato conversion with the 29" barrel? If so, i heard no bad things of it.

    Regards

This is a 23" barrel. I don't think the barrel was converted from 7mm to 7.62 NATO. I think on these they put the 03 Springfield barrel on and then chambered it...

I have one upstairs. As far as I know I have a 2 groove '03-A3 barrel on my rifle. It is a nice shooter. Don't too much about them, the re-barrel job appears to be OK. I had a gunsmith tell years ago that you could not use an '03-A3 barrel on a Mauser action. The barrel will not butt up properly on the receiver, both internally and externally. You get one or the other, not both. These seem OK to me.

Yes they made a few chambered in .30-06 too. They are very rare.
