A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). Several of our scopes are used in the CMP Vintage Sniper competition on top of 1903 rifles. Brian Dick ... Try the internet site Military Fighting Knives. The guys(Gary and John) who run the site are experts and reputable. Occasionally, they will have a F/S for sale. John Gibson has a great F/S collection on display as part of his site. Another great site is F/S Knife.

There are several good books; Commando Knives by Leroy Thompson(1980s) is one. Alan Larken has a very good book. The best is Allied Fighting Knives by Robert Buerlien. Bob is the president of the American Historical Society in Richmond, Virginia and extremely knowledgeable on all things Fairbairn-Sykes.

Avoid getting ripped off with over expensive rubbish. John Nowill are still making Commando Knives brand new. Go for the all black "cheap" version. Or if you have a few bob buy the Wasp handle version. Look on the Hennie Haynes web site or http://www.sheffieldknives.co.uk. Nowills supply The Royal Marines, this knive is also a private purchase by squaddies.

Are you looking for a real commando knife or a fake? If you want the real thing, do the homework so that you will not get ripped off, there are far more fakes out there than there are real Fairbairn - Sykes knives. If you don't want to do the research you can get hurt, either price-wise or quality-wise or both. A good place to start:

Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knife First Pattern

An excellent site with plenty of information. The first page describes the development and the First Pattern, links are provided to the sections on the 2nd Pattern and 2nd Pattern Private Purchase knives and the 3rd Pattern, and on and on. Scabbards are also shown as well as grip variations and markings that you need to be aware of and, very important, post-War production is discussed. Some are not what less knowledgeable collectors (like me) call "fakes" but then, some are..... The linked site will help you. A lot!
