Actually the Frenchicon M2 is very comfortable to wear and you can easily see through the eye lens, you do get a wide view through it.
These masks were simple and easily made which is why many American units used them along with the Britishicon SBR Mask.

The masks in order in the photo
    1. British SBR (Small Box Respirator) Gas Mask
    2. French M2 Masque à Gaz
    3. British PH (Phenate Hexamine) Helmet
    4. Germanicon Lederschutzmaske

The Frenchicon did have more of the face covered. Mustard gas was wicked.
