Bought a C No.7 Mk.I this week!

I bought this off a fellow CGN'er this week. Being shipped to me right now.

Can anyone tell me why there are 2 holes drilled in the stock?

And, um, what about that serial number?

Well, that sure is an odd old girl ...

The serial number XP001 indicates "experimental", yet as you can tell from pic #3 that area of the butt tang has been scrubbed and the number is probably an over stamp. Is the bolt stamped with the serial number too and has it also been scrubbed?

The safety appears to be marked with the overlapping LB Long Branch stamp, but it's shape is not the later Long Branch style?

I have no idea what the holes are, but perhaps left overs from a previous bracket or some kind of sight mounting?

I'm a K98k collector ...

IMO, your CNo7 is a put together rifle however if it's got an original barrel and not a sleeved one you did Ok. The stock is maple which is incorrect for CNo7...should be walnut if original or if replacement a very dark stained birch. The 2 holes are someones attempt to duplicate the accurizing seen on 7.62mm conversion...forget the chap name..Sgt??? from the RCMP. looks like the holes are plugged with AccuGel not beech hardwood like the inventor. The experiment serial number was probable a safe bet for the assembler to gain registeration in Canada as alot of the CNo7 1946 are still in service and the CFC don't take knidly to duplicate SN's surfacing.
