Looking for an M1 serial number

I know this is a long shot, but if the information can be found, I bet this will be the place...

My Dad is 90, a veteran and is still active. He rattled off the serial number the other day of the Carbine he was assigned when he went to the Pacific and I wrote it down. Where would I look to try to find a gun, or part of a gun that had his serial number, if it still existed?

    Serial Number: 1233574

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Jim, I would also try writing CMPicon. For $25 they will do a search of their available records. While they will not tell you who purchased it if they find the serial, at least you will know it came through there. You never know, they may still have it in stock... They say they have a low find rate, but you never know...

That serial would make it a Winchester. Did your dad remember the make?
    Best of luck.

No, he never said what kind it was, it was just one of the serial numbers he was required to remember. He probably would have been assigned to it in late 1942/early 1943 before he went to the Pacific. I've never thought to ask him...I think I will.

Over on the CMPicon forum someone has a long running thread listing the serial nrs of carbines they have. I've looked but didn't find it; maybe someone else will know, or you might want to get on the forum and ask where that thread is located.
