It seems like i see a lot of M1a1 with cracked stocks back by the recoil plate, i would buy a repro to shoot if i were you. Oh, and I would love to see some close-up pics of those two beautys!!

I do agree with you to a point... I keep my highwood I cut RMC in the safe, and use a SA type 5 potbelly for shooting. I also use a round Inland bolt assembly and type VI slide to leave the flat bolt and early slide for "show and tell" as you call it.

I must admit that I have two definite sides to my safe... those that get to go outside and play and those that have to stay inside.... But it sure is tempting to take a couple of "never get to shoot" out sometimes!

Easy solution, buy a carbine (or two or three, etc.) that you wouldn't be afraid to shoot. Save your rare examples.

I appreciate the responses - maybe a new shooter carbine would be the way to go for the bulk of the shooting but still occasionally take out the nice ones?

Some photos of the Rock -

The SN-marked front sight caused some consternation at first until it was pointed out by Ruth in War Baby that Rockola bought about 10,000 front sights from National Postal Meter and so was original. Thanks for looking. I'll get some of the M1A1icon tomorrow.

I'm going to vote with the keep them in the safe crowd. Pick up a shooter from CMPicon and save the nice ones. I've had good luck with the rackers from CMP as shooters. My IBM racker, which was rusted and pitted below the wood, will shoot a one inch group at 50 yards if I do my part.

Ok, thats a good enough reason for me... dropped an order with CMPicon for yet another racker.... one of these days the pawn shop is not going to allow me to pawn the ex-mother-in-law for cash.... but maybe I won't pay off the pawn this time....
