98k Stock serial numbers

Where is the serial number on the stock located?
How would a non matching stock affect the value of an otherwise matching 98k?

up until 1942, German 98ks had their serial number stamped on the underside of the butt stock and, depending on manufacturer, in the barrel channel. from '43 on they switched to only putting the serial number in the barrel channel.

a non matching stock doesn't significantly decrease the value of an all matching rifle, but it won't go for the same as a completely matching rifle

Check the photo montages for any of the K98k's in the Germany - Knowledge Library. You'll see various examples from WW1 and WW2 as to placement of the the serial numbers.

The Germans began to quit numbering stocks in very late 44/early 45. It varried from one factory to the next if/when they quit.

What butt plate was used first? the cupped or flat and when did the change take place.

the flat buttplate. they changed to cupped in late '41

The cupped butt plate went into use in early 1940. I have a bpr dated 40 in the d letter block.
