    SMLE value

I was looking at a SMLE at a local pawn shop today, I do not know anything about SMLEs and I did not get a lot of info on this one. It appeared to be in good condition . It looked like a WW1 rifle with the magazine cutoff on the side of the receiver it had a IP stamped on it They wanted $400 for it. What do the WW1 rifles go for? Sorry I know I have given almost nothing to go on.

Are you sure the IP wasnt DP ?
DP is drill Purpose only and shouldnt be fired (not safe to fire).

Even if its not DP I'd suggest its at least $100 over the top unless its some rare variant.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

IP usually means India Pattern. I had one years ago. However the only thing 'India Pattern' that I could find on it was a solid Piling Swivel lug (No hole for the piling swivel screw.) and an Ishy Screw. (Ishy screws are have been discussed ad infinitum.)

    Ip Smle

That's not a common rifle, hard to say without seeing photos but I would say it HAS to be worth that and a lot more. If I was in the US I'd buy it.

They say that "if" is the middle word in life. It'd be worth the price and maybe a bit more if it's complete and in reasonable condition.
Has it been chopped up to make a deer rifle?
    Is the bore OK?
Do any of the serial numbers on the bolt, backsight, forend or nose cap match the receiver?
It's a tough call without seeing the thing but it sounds like it's worth further investigation.

    rice123,

Page 470 The Lee Enfield by Ian Skennertonicon, says Its an upgrade from a Mk1 to resemble a Mk 111 done at Ishapore, may have a date on the left side of the butt socket of the conversion, Depending on the condition and if the bore is ok, 375 not a bad price.
