See if the CMPicon is selling 223 ammo right now and Midway, Champions Choice, Cabelas,Walmart,etc... You can shoot up to a 69gr reliably in the 1/9 twist gun and up to an 80gr in the 1/7 twist. 55's aren't considered the most accurate bullet but in some guns will rival the match stuff out to 200 yards. There are exceptions, Hornady's bulk 55gr FMJ bullets have a really good reputation for quality practice ammo and I remember shooting PMC 55gr FMJ that hammered at 200 yards, good enough for reduced course (200 yard) matches. As a rule I stay away from Steel Case ammo, reserve that stuff for SKS's and AK's. So use brass case ammo (reloadable too). Does your club have an active Highpower program? If they're both standard A2 or A4 with a 20" barrel and standard buttstock and handguards they're service rifles. Shoot em! If you get bit by the competitive bug(I bet your son will if he tries it) the Colt would be the cheaper of the two to bring up to National Match specs,( Colt barrels are usually very good and can usually hold 1 moa or less at distance). Shooting 69gr bullets at 600 yards on a windy day tries men's souls and that's all you could hope would shoot well through the Bushmaster 1/9. Do you reload at all? That's the most cost effective way to go to feed them. Hope this helped a little, have fun, can't wait until my kids are big enough to take to the range.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered.
