Thanks for sharing the pics . I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.
1. how many grooves in the barrel?
2. is there a punch mark on the underside of the barrel roughly centered under the front sight cuts?

Mike, we are thinking along the same lines.

i already had a database notation on this rifle dating back to 2007. I was just missing the two bits of data. i wish i had known some of the things i know now when i started the database.

I keep telling myself that one of these days i will try migrating the database form Excel to Access or some other real database product. i have about 580 or so records plus another couple of hundred known destroyed (a total of about 600 A4s went thru Captain crunch but I have mislaid the paper list).

I addtion to the data i have a collection of A4 and scope pictures that with a proper database engine it would be a piece of cake (i think ) to make part of the record. What i have been doing is renaming the A4 pics using the rifle s/n followed by a alpha postscript. Hopefully that will simplify the eventual merge.

Jim and Mike, There is a light punch mark where you asked..is it significant of anything? Its under the barrel, between the sight cuts..more info later

Andy thanks for the additional information and pictures. We don't know for certain what the punch mark means.

We do know that A4 barrels were selected from general A3 barrel production and measured to determine that they met certain speifications as to ream diameter (.300" tp.301") and rifling diameter (.308' to .309"). Its possible ordnance required the mark in order to distinguish the inspected and passed barrels from all the others.

Although he doesn't claim to know the purpose of the mark J.C. Harrison noted that it appears on A4 rifles in his 2004 revision.

I have to agree with JimG. No definitive proof exists to my knowledge as to what the 'bottom' punch mark actually means.

This question was brought up on the "Old" Jouster Forum with many replys' by folks that obviously had original 03-A4 Reciever/Barrel Combo's marked such as yours (IMHO).

While it seems reasonable and proable that "Hand Selected" Barrels would/could have been used on 03-A4's it is uclear to me at present...if the punch mark indicates anything special. I say that only because I've seen 'Plain Jane' O3-A3's marked the same; not many..but I've seen them.

Your Rifle appears to be excellant and your pictures are as well. Thank you for sharing them!!
