What do these plugged holes mean?

I have posted pictures of this rifle before, but today noticed that there are two plugged holes in the receiver...

Any ideas? Please son't say Bubba got a hold of this. My theory is an ex sniper rifle that helped win WWII!

I'd say it's a Williams peep or something like that. Cheer up, maybe the guy was at least a vet!

What is the serial number? That would help, could be a NRA sales rifle, or Bubba has struck again. So what is the serial number?

1903 Springfield Rifle

Either a Williams or a Redfield. A few M1903s were fitted with Lyman rear sights, but there would be some cuts in the stock. Done post-military and not an NRA Sporter. Sorry!

Are there issues with the early bolts? Wasn't the heat treating problem just the recevier?

Technically, the bolts were made the same way. However, the Army seemed not to be concerned and continued to used the earlier bolts. Most M1903 shooters replace theirs. If the bolt is correct (or has obviously been with the rifle a long time), they keep the bolt and obtain a M1903A3 bolt, which can still be obtained fairly cheaply.
