This looks way too good to be a fake, but the markings don't seem to add up, neither does the Serial Number, any thoughts?

Spotless, Very Clean Display looking as this Rifle has a unusual History Very Pretty example,Little History..I read about this Rifle on a respected Forum in Enfield section.: Surplusrifleforum.com • View topic - Help a newbie with an ID in Enfield section ... Seems it had been sold and returned due to possible "Fake Enfield" I have read all the thoughts in regard to this pretty gun and bought it from an Honest Collector the orginal owner who bought the gun as an aparant Orginal. I have taken it apart and have found all the parts to be British however the reciever markings are incorrect marked "No4 MK 1944"Incorrect marking, in full and untraceable by me as to origin,Have only seen this marking on a Kyber Pass examples.. the stock which is far to good looking too be Kyhber well fitted, Brand new looking fresh Well fit workmanship, Metal is great and action crisp.. I have concluded this to be a work of art at the very least and the nicest example of a Clean working Display Enfield I have ever seen. Appears to have never been fired. ., all working parts, Barrel nice..Arbic marking on butt stock---- Everyone who has given an opinion to this rifles maker has agreed it a pretty piece and the Gunny who did it, did it nice. Khyber Pass? seems far to nice and far too many Proper Enfield parts..More pics on forum site listed above. Thanks for viewing Need more pics let me know I think this to be a great collectors piece and conversation piece for collectors and any info In regard to the origin would be welcomed Could this be an unissued Enfeild? or a redo ? either way this is a pretty Enfield 303.Enfield Collectors only No NR's please This needs to go to a Enfield collector IMO .Happy to keep it on my wall I think it worth more as a spotless example than a run of the mill.UPDATE..I have fired it in the air, it went bang and all is well.

I think that someone has put this piece together, as well as sanded and refinshed the stock. For whatever reason they also buffed and replaced the correct Enfield stamping on the receiver.

It boggles the mind ...

Could it be they used an "spare" and unmarked reciever to build an new wapon?
I have heard some rumers in the past that these recievers existed some were in an old warehouse........

I would suspect that the rifle went through a rebuild, private or public, somewhere, or was assembled from parts. Receivers have been offered for sale in the US by Numrich. One that I had was renumbered on the buttsocket, but who knows....
