Stormin' Norman carried an M1A1 carbine in Vietnam

I had heard about this picture and finally went searching for it on Google. Apparently Schwarzkopf carried an M2 carbine in an M1A1 folding stock when he was a young Lieutenant In South Vietnam in 1965. Could be some spare 30s in that top left pocket. I always knew I liked that guy!!!!

He sure was a lot thinner in that photo than when I met him Saudi Arabia. Of course I was a thinner when I met him than I am now. Funny how that works.

That would be the wife's cooking verses military food. Plus the stress, heat, action. I went to VN at 165, came back 140. Now 40 years later 200, go figure.

GCK, that photo was taken at Duc Co special forces camp, August 1965 (photographer Peter Arnett). That would be in II Corp on Rt. 19, west of Pleiku, if that helps.....Frank

No idea, but that well could be the local's Carbine. As an American Officer Stormin' could have carried anything he so desired.

Frank said there were lots of pictures in the book that show him with an M1A1, so it is probably his in this pic. It makes sense, though. A handy PDW for his carry and lots of ammo because the locals and many advisors used it.

BTW, Che Guevara also carried an M2 carbine fighting in Central America. Most pictures I have seen of him with a weapon, it is an M2. He was definitely carrying one when he was "terminated with extreme prejudice" by the CIA.

N/O the Chu Pong and hard on Cambodia. One of my buddies over there was a LRRP with the 101st. He was shot twice in the thigh on separate occasions, about 2 inches apart and both times by a carbine. He finally never came back from one, just disappeared. Lots of carbines over there. PFs, Mikes, Rangers all used them in 1966.
