Delevopment of Recoil checks

I am trying to find info on the development of recoil checks on the M1 Carbine.I read Bill Ricca's artical on the Flash hider and it is excellent. Now I am curious about the recoil check. Any suggestions on where to find info.Thanks GK

As a result of combat testing of the pre M2 carbines it was decided that a recoil check was needed for the M2 carbines. Springfiled Armory developed a number of test pieces and finally came up with the T13. This was recommended for adoption as Recoil Check M1 on October 11,1945. Underwood (.U.) and National Tool & Die ( NLD) made them and they were marked CHECK,RECOIL. M1. That's all the infomation I have on them and there doesn't seem to be a lot more then that.

Found this in a pile o' stuff at a local gun show:



The tag said "Flash Hider" but .... Never seen NLD's before, just Underwood's, so I bought it . For what period was NLD's production contract (if anybody knows) and how can I tell whether this one is legit or repro ?

I would guess that NLD contract would have been about the same time frame as Underwoods and again I am guessing about 1946. Springfield Armory also made them but they were produced during the Korean War if I remember correctly. All the repos I have seen were made in Spain and stamped as such.
