A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. As a result of combat testing of the pre M2 carbines it was decided that a recoil check was needed for the M2 carbines. Springfiled Armory developed a number of test pieces and finally came up with the T13. This was recommended for adoption as Recoil Check M1icon on October 11,1945. Underwood (.U.) and National Tool & Die ( NLD) made them and they were marked CHECK,RECOIL. M1. That's all the infomation I have on them and there doesn't seem to be a lot more then that.

Found this in a pile o' stuff at a local gun show:

The tag said "Flash Hider" but .... Never seen NLD's before, just Underwood's, so I bought it . For what period was NLD's production contract (if anybody knows) and how can I tell whether this one is legit or repro ?

I would guess that NLD contract would have been about the same time frame as Underwoods and again I am guessing about 1946. Springfield Armory also made them but they were produced during the Korean War if I remember correctly. All the repos I have seen were made in Spain and stamped as such.
