Update for Iinternet Explorer users ....

All Internet Explorer browser versions allow cookiejacking | Ecommerce Journal

Internet Explorer was found to have a flaw that allows hackers to steal cookies to access their accounts on some websites. The bug was found by a security researcher Rosario Valotta who said it could let hackers steal credentials to access FaceBook, Twitter and other websites.

"Any website. Any cookie. Limit is just your imagination," said Valotta, an independent Internet security researcher based in Italyicon.

Hackers can exploit the flaw to access a data file stored inside the browser known as a "cookie," which holds the login name and password to a web account, Valotta said via email

As a perpetrator access the cookie they can use it to access the same site concludes Valotta who dubs the technique as "cookiejacking."

The vulnerability affects all versions of Internet Explorer, including IE 9, on every version of the Windows operating system.

To exploit the flaw, the hacker must persuade the victim to drag and drop an object across the PC's screen before the cookie can be hijacked.

While it may sound like a difficult task, Valotta said he was able to do it fairly easily. He built a puzzle that he put up on Facebook in which users are challenged to "undress" a photo of an attractive woman.

"I published this game online on FaceBook and in less than three days, more than 80 cookies were sent to my server," he said. "And I've only got 150 friends."
    Regards,
    Doug

Hpw would this flaw affect this site?

My internet exposure is pretty limited.

Is Firefox or AOL better to access this site? (not an option during the week.)

It doesn't affect you on THIS site, but just be aware, as per the article, what you're doing with IE on other sites.

Do not use AOL... you will "hang" yourself in the closet ...

Firefox or Safari are very good browsers (much faster than any IE version) and I use both ...

You should give them a try and check the speed differences, unless your computer s the limiting factor.

    Doug

No worries with AOL, we ignore most of it's features- It's WBS2111's work e-mail address and he doesn't do change well.

Firefox is OK, but I keep closing it out accidentally. Speed isn't an issue even with the old computers, this one is only three years old, so it's just a "baby" for me. (And, no, I still don't own one!- AND went back to broadcast TV, but hardly watch it anyway.)

It has it's stupid front page, but AOL is responding 5-10 times faster than Firefox this morning! Had enough of waiting and am back to AOL. Posts go up faster and phot editing is HUGELY quicker!

You might have to make some settings changes in your IE6 Browser after the update is installed, or things might even get worse.

IE8! Finally... Oddly, it still crashes in the regular format, but the new IE8 thingie "uncrashes" it immediately. Just as long as it sort of works, that's fine!

The "mobile mode" DOES have one particularly useful feature that the regular format mode doesn't seem to have- It remembers the last post read and takes you immediately to the "first unread post". Quite handy at times.

Glad you were able to upgrade ...

By the way, it's not just unique to the Mobile Style we have, ALL browsers go to the last post you've read in a thread. For example, I use FireFox and if I click on a thread I've previously read, it takes me right to the first unread post in that thread. What causes this is your own database record stored on our site, not the browser. It remembers what you've read and haven't read. There's also an option called View First Unread located in every thread along the top navigation bar for the thread, to the left of other options. It does the same thing.

    Regards,
    Doug

Well, sometimes the obvious just isn't...

BTW, The corporate use of old browsers apparently isn't uncommon- behind the scenes. Some old programs just don't take to the new features. Fire alarm systems for example. A friend who works for another multinational corporation says he sees this fairly regularly. Most folk aren't allowed to use it for such nefarious purposes as posting on this fine site, though! All blocked and internalized. We Morlocks in the shops never were denied access. In fact, quite the opposite, just as long as quality and productivity remain on an upward trend. I suspect IE6 is still running in our systems, somewhere...
