There's a good little and relatively cheap little book out about the Sten gun that will very probably answer your Sten Q's TNT. It's call 'The Sten Machine Carbine' and it's available from BDLicon in SC or the publisher, Collector Grade in Canadaicon. It's a good read and will tell you all you need to know about the much derided but cheap Mk3 Sten. Cheap, yes but whether you have a £50 walnut stocked and blued Thompson gun or a £2:7/- (that's £2:35p now) Sten gun, you can only kill someone so dead.............

Your No.4 Mk1* rifle was made in the USAicon by Savage-Stevens. The 'US Property' marking denotes it was supplied as a 'Lend-Lease' weapon. The Mk1* lacks the separate bolt release catch found on the Britishicon made No.4's. Long Branch of Canadaicon also made the Mk1*.

Having referred to the very fine tome which Mr Laidlericon mentions, your Sten MkIII was made by Lines Brothers Limited at their factory at Merton in South-West London. They made nearly 900K MkIII's and an 'H' serial number prefix makes it very late production. But you'll be wanting a copy of your own of course. ;-)

*sigh* I should never have sold my pre-1995 spec deactivated MkII and MkIII Stens. :-(

Your Sten will also have the mark LB on the magazine housing somewhere. That's Lines Brothers and NOT Long Branch

Line Brothers of course were more famous to us Britishicon and Commonwealth baby boomers as Triang.

The model railways part of the company is still going from strength to strength trading nowadays as Hornby.

Arnhem eh............ Don't let anyone tell you that the first Patchett guns were taken and used there. It is a folklore fairy story that has taken to become fact after all the years.

Agh, its a Mk2 then. The Mk2 has the detachable barrel (Unless its a deac) and the short barrel shroud, the MkIII has the fixed barrel and long barrel shroud with only a short stub of the end of the barrel showing. The Book Mr L mentions is well worh it, it shows dozens of versions and copies from all over the world and includes pics of most of the accesories you can find for them.

    ATB, Chris.

p.s. Theres pics of the Mk1 which I would love to own, but the Mk2 is my favourite!
