Well, I got another one !

Went to the gun show today to sell a couple of rifles and to NOT buy anything else. And sell two rifles I did but I also bought another Model of 1917. This is starting to get to be a problem.

It's a real nice mixmaster - Eddystone receiver #285xxx with mostly Eddystone and Remington parts with a real pretty Winchester barrel (2/19) and stock. I bought it because the Winny barrel was just beautiful inside and out - gauges a hair less than a 2 for muzzle wear and the TE gauge - which may not be the right one for a 1917 - shows 2.5. Headspace was good too as it closes on the Go but not on the NoGo gauge. The dang thing is full of thick brownish read grease.

It's got arsenal rebuild marks - the "3 GM-K" is one that I'm familiar with but the AOL is not familiar. Maybe this was AAOL and that first A was rubbed off? Anybody ever seen this mark before?

It also came with a real nice 1907 sling - I think these are worth some money, aren't they?

Anyway it's going to be another shooter and I wanted to share. Thanks for looking.

    John

I just noticed that there is a "1917" in between R-S and GMS on the sling. You can see it in the photo too. I hate being blind.

Those things are like a puppy or kitten following you home from school. I almost had one follow me home this weekend, looked to be in similar condition but all visible marks were "E".

Don't know for sure but is the "AOL" American Legion? Not sure, just a guess. Sure looks like a keeper to me.

I believe the "AO" indicates that the rifle was inspected at the Anniston Ordnance Depot. The "L" would be the initial of the inspector. The Anniston (Alabama) depot was established immediately prior to WWII. I believe it was renamed the Anniston Army Depot sometime in the early 1960s.
