Rare Enfield Rest - Australian Arms Auction Catalogue

This unsusal rest caught my eye in the latest Australian Auction Arms Catalogue (Sunday October 3rd) - Item 447

RARE ENFIELD REST: for sighting in sniper rifles; frame cast SAF 789; complete with sighting scope in fitted box; marked RIFLE LAYER A48 C.S.O. NO.42. A very complicated piece of equipment suitable for a museum.(Rifle not included)

Thought the pic was worth sharing.

I don't remember ours having wheels on them - except handwheels of course, or the spent case deflector. Whoever wins it will need a hefty old car to move it! We still use one and every telescope I repair gets test fired for shock loading from one.

Enfield rest............. There was even an Army Ordnance part number for them!

We had one on the 25 yd range in Victoria BC for some time. This was in the 70s. Too heavy to move so it stayed put until disposal. It was far larger as I recall and was a floor mount. The size of a good floor lathe. It had hand wheels and recoil springs and such. Zinc chromate green coloured. Even as a kid I knew what it was for and would have taken it then if I could.

LERA has one here in UK - but again, too heavy to move and so it never gets used. I wish I had access to one for testing!

I often thought that the NRA/NSC at Bisley should install a machine rest on a 100 yd test range. At a stroke, you could eliminate all those generations of shooters saying: "the ammo is a bit suspect/ the bedding is faulty/ the barrel is shot-out/ the sights seem to have some back-lash/ the butt markers aren't very good today/ my SMLE can't hit a barn from the inside/ etc"..... LOL...

this one on the auction site has wheels on it type castor unwileding.
and going by the relative size of the HT sitting it doesn't look that big. Could easily fit in the back of the tojo and a 700 kg hiab would do the trick!

Well, if you want to help me drag it out of "the shed" (tm) I'm sure we can make a deal or if not I will even drive it to Toronto for pick up. Price negotiable.....
However, be prepared to bring a large car or a half ton as it weights a bloody ton (well, at least 350 pounds).
