P38 Help!!

Looking at a P38 today at local shop, dont know much about them, but have always wanted one. AC 44 marked(walther i think). Barrel and frame # match. No import marks. Brown Grips. Has 359 and 552 nazi proofs. P38u mag. Looks like original blue to me, but im not sure. all the stamps have what appears to be some kind of white paint in them to make them stand out. The thing im not sure about is the safety, all the ones i am seeing online have red paint in the F. This one does not, My question is-does that mean it is refinished? they only want $349 for it.

No that does not mean refinished. The condition and type of finish will tell you that.

What clues should i look for for a refinish on a P38? Were the Nazi proofs stamped before or after finish? None of the markings are washed out or faded.

If it's not import marked then it's most likely a vet bring back. If the lettering and the proof stamps are sharp and clear and don't appear to be filled in or distorted then it probably isn't a refinished P-38. The paint for the safety could have worn off or been poorly applied when made. Any P-38 for that price is a very good buy even if it were refinished as most are in the $500 and up range.

Yes it is a Walther. The slide and the Locking block under the bbl should also have matching nrs. Where do you find a 552 proof? There should be No such mark! Many P.38s do not have the red on the F. I don't think late war pistold were painted. IF matching nrs that is a Very Good price. If not then a bit high.

Well I missed out on it, went back to the store to buy it and it was gone. Shouldnt have hessitated.

The ones being brought in from the Ukraine are re-arsenaled and import marked and selling for $449. See Southern Ohio Gun. $349 was a steal on that piece, refinished or not.
