Reporting Info to the Carbine Club : Tips , Suggested References , etc. , etc ?

The core of the question is how can a noob contribute some useful info , what would be useful and what would be a waste of time? I became a member for about one year back around 2003-2004 , but realized that the learning curve was too steep for me to climb during that period in my life.
Info on one or two good reference books to use when completing a data sheet would help.
Mistakes to avoid ? Other tips ?
Are spot reports about mixmaster barrel dates & reciever markings of value? Pic's of Italian stock stamps ? Pic's of accessories from various allies ?
Any advice would be much appreciated .

With study, the sheets are for the most part self-explanatory. Though not at first glance, and no books or other references for "terminology" required. Best examples are the Carbine of the Month sheets in your newsletters.

I try to send data for guns I haven't touched, swapped parts one, etc, i.e. buy barrelled receiver from CMP, send datasheet, then have fun with it.

Are spot reports of mixmaster assemblies important? Guess some are, some not. For the price of a stamp, I let them figure it out.

FWIW, one of my to be reported sheets will extend the current High/Low serial number ranges observed for SG, at least as published early this year. All my other mixmasters can make no such claim to fame, but reported upon transfer into civilian hands they are as received.

The best two books I would say are Ruth's War Baby, and Reisch M1 carbines, war time production. Even with those you might struggle somewhat as the sheet is sometimes hard to decipher what they mean. There is of course a whole series of "how to fill out the sheet" part by part with pictures in the old newsletters, but I only found those after I bought the whole library of newsletters. Just my opinion.

I've been a member of the Carbine Club since 1985. I still don't like filling out data sheets. But there is a lot of information to be gained from them. I still learn a lot when they do a up date. The last one on Inlands really filled in a lot of gaps that were there before. So you just need to do it and then wait for the results. It's worth the wait. Bill

There are many menbers here that have had information published in the CC NL. You can PM one of them and run an idea by them. MB and others are always looking for ideas for Spotters Reports and ideas for articles. You can mail one of them, addresses are on the back of every NL. Or email them a picture of something you think is unusal and they will get back with you. Subjects for NL are planed out six to twelve months in advance. And it may take several weeks to months for one of them to get back to you. Most of them also have real jobs that take up most of their time.

Carbine Club data sheets

I discovered Riesch and the CC Data Sheets at the same time. I found Riesch's photos oftentimes helped me make sense out of the Data Sheet's line drawings. The Data Sheets for the most part follow Riesch's parts types. They encourage you to write on the back with clarifications. I even got an attaboy on my first one - I'm sure you can too.

As with any complex task, fill in the ones you are sure of first, then move to the others. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step (I did not think that up).

i spotted an underwood with a broken serial number like the qhmc carbines that were just reported, Marty Black said that it will be in the next newsletter....(think i will get a mention ? lol )
