    G98/40 Chromed

    Hello,

Has anyone ever encountered a Hungarianicon G98/40 with chromed parts? I have one that has chromed butt plate, floor plate, trigger guard, front site hood and barrel bands. This rifle was brought back from Germanyicon after the war, and my uncle had been in Berlin during the fighting. Story is that he took if from a government building. Unfortunately he passed on several years before the rifle came into my hands therefore could not/cannot ask him about the rifle. Any thoughts on this?

Documented or guess? Has anyone got any pictures of these rifles in use?

Kind of an educated guess based on the information you provided. Anything chromed was used for formal dress events rather than standard combat. A Hungarianicon rifle in a governmental building in Berlin has the best odds of being with the embassy in some fashion.

Was your uncle a Germanicon or Russianicon during the fighting or an American or some other nationality in Berlin after the war's end?

I did a quick web search and found a reference to the Testörség' [Govenmental Guards] having chromed parts on their rifles. It was with their Mannlicher Model 1931 Infantry Long Rifle however. Would expect them to carry the tradition on to other rifles in their possession.
