No4 bolt head size 3

Alright, being as we are on boltheads, anyone besides me ever run into a 00, a 4 or a 5?

I have a 00 in my spares box (also 0, 1, 2 and 3) and once owned a rifle with a 4. I actually SAW a 5 once upon a time and it was actually on a functioning rifle. Always wanted to get a 4 and a 5 so I would have the complete set. I quite understand that all the 4 and 5 heads were removed as quickly as possible, but just wondering if any have survived the smelters?

The 00 size was only for use on the L39 rifle to cater for some manufactured with extremely tight CHS. As for the No4 and 5, these were NEVER either isssued or used in British or other commonwealth service except for, perhaps India (?) and Pakistan. I suspect the manufacturing culprit to be Pakistan

Smellie, I've an L42a1 with a "double naught" bolt head that was discussed some time back, but I don't remember the thread. Don't remember if I have a photo or not of the head, but the rifle seems to be a "high mileage" example.

I've got an Enforcer with a 00 bolt head. Despite the designation stamped on the bolt head, there is a lot of variation within the numbering scheme. I believe Alan de Enfield posted his survey results. You might want to measure a few before purchasing a "3". I've had a lot of sucess at finding "2"'s in the upper range of the "3"'s. They did the job quite nicely.

Thanks for the rundown on the 00, guys. This is good day: I LEARNED something.

As to the rifle with the 4, it was a Number 4, 1942 IIRC, 2-groove barrel. The bolt matched the body, just the rifle had been kicked around. It was later stolen from me by an off-duty cop, so not much point complaining to the police about it!

The rifle with the 5 was for sale at Lever's in Vancouver. I was making $222.10 month at that time, so buying a $19.95 rifle just for the bolthead was out of line.

Both those incidents were about 45 years ago. Haven't seen anything like that since.

Ooops....... When I said that the 00 size was for the L39, I meant the whole heavy barrel 7.62mm series. The 00 boltheads were a means by which barrels with chambers machined/reamed too short could be utilised instead of scrapped.
