It was a marvellous weekend. I was only able to stay for the Saturday and had to leave in the afternoon, but I had a ball.
The highlight was spending a few hours with these blokes. Extremely knowledgeable, switched on and experienced. I was easily the least-experienced collector in the group but nobody treated me like the new guy. When one meets people who can talk for hours about Lee-Enfield minutiae, it is a humbling and marvellous learning experience. I was disappointed that I had to leave, but a 6am start the following day gave me no choice.
The visit to the back-room at the museum was a real treat and an eye-opener. The number of historically important rifles was breathtaking. I handled weapons that I'd only read about. Photos will follow. I'm extremely grateful to the SAF museum staff who showed us through, and the blokes who organised it. Thanks chaps!
I took a bit of footage and when I can find my camera cable, I'll be able to dump the raw files and make a video. I had a brain fart at one point when I was filming the No6 rifles. I didn't hear myself talking and a chuckle and a comment about "the cutting-room floor" made me realise I was doing something silly. Sure enough, I was referring to the No6 MkI as a No1 MkVI! No 1930s trials rifles here! That's what happens when one is filming, commentating and not wanting to miss any of the conversation going on just off-screen! Especially when I'd been using the correct terminology when talking about No6 rifles for a good part of the day!
Doug, would I be able to make a reference to Milsurps.com in the video?
Bring on 2011.
