    CMP M1 bayonet

The CMPicon started selling a M1icon bayonet and M7 scabbard from an unidentified maker. The CMP presumes they are US. The marking appears to be EN 5 (rather than ENS noted by the CMP). The S in US is curved while the EN 5 has squared corners.

The CMP listing is http://www.thecmp.org/accessories.htm see the "Garand Bayonet - Model M1with Scabbard - Used/serviceable"

There are two different “US” markings on the scabbards ; one of the scabbards shows a makers mark molded into the plastic, a double H with a WV above it, as shown in the pictures.

Any info about these bayonets would be appreciated.

I'm quite sure these aren't U.S. issue but I've no proof for you. I was offered one of those scabbards recently at a gunshow and turned it down for that reason. The marking on the scabbard reminds me of something Greek I've seen way in the past.
    Regards, Jim

Looks like the crossguard is cast? I see a distinct line.

Not an Expert..Don't know if it means much.

I saw the same thing but took it to be a forging mark.

    Possibly a Taiwan Scabbard

Kirk, the symbol in the right most picture on post #1 (the H intersected with a vertical line and a "tree top" on a scabbard) is shown on page 65 of American Military Bayonets of the 20th Century. Under drawings of a bayonet and two different scabbard markings, the author writes, "This M1icon Bayonet and M7 style scabbard are believed to have been made on Formosa for use on their M1 Rifles."

I assume that when foreign countries return their M1 Garands and associated equipment to the US, they just send everything regardless where it was produced. I also assume that the people involved in the sending and receiving don't know (and most don't care) where the items were manufactured. It is up to collectors to solve these mysteries.

I assume much the opposite - they only turn in what they have to to meet their obligations, and sell the rest. The CMPicon bought the bayonets as part of a package deal.

you would think the CMPicon would fire sale(reduce)these as i know most will steer clear as they don't seem collectible.

I looked at the CMPicon page. Nothing there looked, to me, to be in the collectible status.
If you are just starting out, you have to start somewhere. What are you seeing at gun shows for the same money? Compare condition and prices.
Some may want to have one, just because they don't have a better example.
These were a lot less money and better condition when some of us started, so we are lucky and spoiled a bit by looking at today's values.

Are you saying they have to look almost brand new, not used, to be collectible. I'll check the CMPs I ordered with the ones I paid double($125) at the gun shows.
