Interesting that there were 750 Aldis scopes on hand in 1917 unfitted to rifles. This while photos show many in France making do with the miserable PPCo. scope, the questionable Winchester A5 or often no scopes at all!
Apparently the stores wallahs followed peacetime policy that the rifles on issue were "good enough" and that issue having been made, nothing was needed except replacements for losses?
This might explain the relatively pristine Aldis scopes sometimes seen on eBay and elsewhere, which appear to have had little use despite being fitted with Aldis or Purdey mounts. Probably these sat in stores throughout the war and were then stripped and sold off post-war with the rest of them.
