    1903 Springfield Question

Hello All: I am looking at a 1903 Springfield that has some unusaul markings on it. Between the stamping "Model 1903" and the serial number there are stamped letters that look like
PAO D or PAQ D. Does anyone have an idea of what those letters mean and who would have stamped them on the receiver? They are definitely not factory markings as I have never seen anything like this before. Thanks for any help you can give me.......Rick H.

Rick the Librarianicon may be standing on your front porch with gobbler leg in hand waiting to see your rifle. Rick will tell you all that is known about your rifle.

    POD is Philippine Ord Depot

Rick (RTL) had a photo of a Colt 1911 that had the POD stamped on the frame. The POD is the Philippine Ord Depot and the additional letter is the inspectorAttachment 17558

I understand the PODD stamped into the stock, however this rifle has "PAO D" stamped into the receiver. The "O" could be a "Q". would PAO D still be a Philippine stamp of some sort? The stamped letters are somewhat sloppy and not in a straight line. Thanks.....Rick H.

With a "PA" it wouldn't be Philippines.

Panama maybe. Or it may be something from after it was sold.

With a number like that maybe a Rock Island?

Unfortunately, I don't have the rifle. There is one similar to it on Gunsamerica. The ID no. is 998659317.
