I have a 2L LB with NZicon ownership marks in new condition and it doesn't have the waisted front sight guard or hinged upper band. I'd guess there aren't many so equipped.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). Several of our scopes are used in the CMP Vintage Sniper competition on top of 1903 rifles. Brian Dick ... Regarding Aussie issue of No.4 rifles, I did things the old way and read a book.....

Mr. Skennertonicon writes in 'Australianicon Service Longarms' of 1976 - my copy is number 1197 of 2000 printed - on page 169...

"About 2,000 No.4 Mk I rifles made at Long Branch, in Canadaicon, were diverted to Australia in 1942 when Allied forces were defeated in Asia. They were issued to RAAF and AEME (Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) for training purposes."

The rifle shown on this page is a true No.4 Mk I not a * and is said to have Australian Issue marks on the butt and has the early button cocking piece, but a standard straight frontsight protector.

The rifles were possibly intended for the Canadianicon Army in Hong Kong, which fell on Christmas Day 1941.

No.4's were also used by the Volunteer Defence Corps. From the AWM collection #063000:
"YUNGABURRA, QLD. 1944-01-16. LANCE CORPORAL J. S. RUSSELL OF NO. 10 PLATOON, 17TH BATTALION, VOLUNTEER DEFENCE CORPS GETTING THE FEEL OF HIS NEW RIFLE AND BAYONET"
