    Safety Lock Detent

I watched the youtube video on reassembly of the bolt mentioned in the current M1903A3 Bolt Problem thread. The youtube presenter indicated that the safety lock should detent in each of the 3 positions. My 12/42 M1903 doesn't do this - smooth movement from one extreme to the other. I don't see any dips in the groove if this is the detent mechanism.

Some safeties have three detents , some only two. An expert will have to chime in as to where and when each would be proper for what ventage gun.

I looked closer and there is a pocket in the READY position which seems to work and a shallower one in the SAFE position which doesn't. Nothing in the straight up position.

The safety lock center detent position was eliminated in early 1942, long before the '03-A3 went into production.

Nevertheless, the center straight-up position is the one required for disassembling/re-assembling the bolt.

    Hope this helps.
