Irish Contract

I just acquired a very nice Fazakerley No.2 with a s/n of PF31XXXX dated 12/53 putting it within the range of the so-called "Irish Contract" according to Stratton. Unlike most that I've seen, this has seen service, but it is in very good condition. All the parts are matching including the forend. In addition, the barrel as well as all of the smaller parts such as bands are marked with the tell-tale "F" and are appropriately dated. I am especially pleased because I paid less than $200 for it. What surprises me is that the furniture is English walnut, the first time I've come across one that wasn't beech. I'm just wondering if anyone knows when or with what serial number Faz began using beech. Cheers and Merry Christmas!!

The only No4 Mk2 furniture I have seen in Walnut is from Pakistani Ordnance Factory----no British Walnut at all. Are you certain you are not looking at dyed Beech? I also have an Irish Contract rifle in issued condition and the stock might be mistaken for Walnut because of the color---until the characteristic Beechwood rays are found.

I also have an issued and no's matching Faz No4MkII that looks like it's stocked in a very light Walnut. On close inspection it is obvious it's Beech however. BTW did yours come with the no's matching bayonet?

No bayo. I will Take the furniture off and see what the unfinished side looks like.
