I recall a story from years ago. The Outdoor Recreation Office at a unrecalled Army base in West Germanyicon sold K98's for many years. A local German was the source of the rifles and he always had nice, clean Mausers. Well, one day the the Recreation Office ran out of Mausers and they sent out a GI to pick up 4-5 more. The German said he had finally run out of Mausers. The GI asked him what he meant by "runout"? He said in May of 1945 a German Battalion had surrendered to the Britishicon and had stacked all of their weapons in his barn. No one ever came by to collect them and he eventaully began selling them off to the American Army base. Now they were all sold off. I know Army EOD always finds stuff in the rivers in Germany whenever they have a dry year. Those were the times.
