New 1917 "Collector"

Howdy all and sundry,

Just realized I am becoming a m1917 collector since I have procured two in the last four months. My first foray into them was about four years ago when I picked up a butchered Eddystone from a pawn shop. Great rifle that shot one inch, five-shot groups with iron sights at two hundred yards. I blame the rifle, not my skills. Never had owned a gun that would do that, so when I came upon a sported up Winchester 17 at a pawnshop I grabbed it up. A couple of weeks ago I snagged another Remy 17 from another pawnshop. I took two fine Georgia bucks this last season with the Winny, and just zeroed the Remy with the Weaver V8 the came with the Winchester.

Both old guns shoot consistent one inch groups at 100. The Winchester has one of the old blondish weatherby looking california heavy monte carlos with a faux ivory forearm cap, and grip cap. It would look better on safari, but suits me just fine for whitetails. The Remy has a beautiful classic lined walnut stock with a medium cheekpiece. The butt plate says Interarms, but I don't know if they did the sporterizing or not. Beyond the ordinance markings and Remington name on the front action ring the barrel is stamped on the lefthand side "m1917 enfield .30 06 sp" It is rather crudely stamped but is blued over suggesting a reblue before sale. Anyone know who made these markings on these rifles? The barrel has been crowned, and the bolt handle straightened.

Both of these rifles are awesome, and I am glad to see there is a community out there of people who love them. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Welcome to the addiction. My first m-1917 was a sporterized eddystone. It shoots great, better than I do. Wait till you get your first full military version. Then it gets fun.

theres a number of us , but i think we tend to be quieter than some of the other groups , you are in good company tho

ive had a number of M17s and i have a nice P14 , this will be the next area you inspect i think , they are the tie between my two collecting interests at least untill you reach the FAL

I got my first one an eddy 3 months ago then a winnie and then a bubba'd eddy for parts. Lookin for a remmie. It gets obsesive. the fever!

I happen to love the M17 also. The only one I have is an Eddystone that was sent to Canada and never got the rebuild that most did, still in the blue and no parkerizing. When I took it to the range it was awesome at 100yds with my reloads. I've passed on several of these that were sporterized in the past, but when this one came by I couldn't pass on it especially at the price of $125 at my favorite pawn shop. Best bargain I have run accross.

Picked this one up in a trade in 1970. It had a different stock and scope then, but it would hold 1" all day even with its pitted barrel. Hunted with it in Alaska in 1972 and for whitetail down south for years after. I later restocked it and re-barreled it since the throat was getting long and gave it a new Burris scope. It always has been and still is my favorite rifle, even though I have others.
