    Mauser marked 7.62

I spotted this at my local shop yesterday. I have made myself a promise that I wouldn't take my collecting into other areas.....BUT! I did not handle it but it had a large "7.62" impressed in the bottom of the butt. Looked to be in VG condition. Israel, I believe he said. Are there many on the market and are they desireable? What "type" Mauser are they?

The Israelis converted many K98ks to 7.62mm. There are all sorts - every variation of Mauser that the Israelis had was converted. Some of the nicest were the ones made by FN for the Israelis, post-war commercial contract rifles, with the IDF crest on the ring. Many of the Mausers which were retained in 7.92mm had rings filed in their bolt handles, so they could be identified by touch. A large quanity of the 7.62mm Mausers was shipped into Central America.
Usually these rifles shoot really well. There were two variations of magazine conversions - one had spacers at only one end, the other used a block at both ends.

Here's one of my 7.62 mm Mausers that hasn't been prepared (published) yet for the Milsurp Knowledge Libraryicon.

    1945 swp K98k Israeli 7.62mm (click here)

Also, here's an ad for one in the Quartermaster Stores. The ad is now closed, but it doesn't indicate whether it sold or not. You might want to check with the seller if you're interested.

WTS: 308 Israeli Mauser beautiful condition

    Hope this helps....

    Regards,
    Badger
