Need advice
I had bought a $100 barreled receiver from CMP months ago. This weekend the gunsmith was able to remove the old shot out barrel but in doing so the receiver was cracked on the clip latch side, the crack starts at the face of the receiver at the wood line and ends at the hole for the the clip latch tab. He told me he can (and I am going to use that nasty four letter word) weld it and it will be useable. Should I junk it or let him weld it? Thanks
John

Make him replace it at his cost with a serviceable receiver and he gets to keep the new paper weight. Find a new Smith that has a real Garand receiver wrench.

I second what JBS has said. YOU should not be held responsible for replacing the receiver an incompetent gunsmith ruined. Further more, he should have never even made the suggestion to weld it! He should have just said "I F'ed up and I will buy you a receiver and make this right".

+1 on THAT! At a minimum, he owes you a full refund for his work, PLUS the $100 you spent on the barreled receiver. Welding on a receiver is only acceptable if the entire receiver is first machined back to factory specs after the welding, then completely re-heat treated to ensure no annealing or weak spots exist and finally be reparkerized to restore the finish. All that will likely cost him MUCH more than $100, and you still may wind up with a questionable receiver. Too bad you found such a miserable excuse for a gunsmith.

Gunsmith broke it gunsmith replaces it. A receiver of equal value. Don't let him cut corners or it will be you that suffers.
