Birchwood Casey Plumb Brown

Hi all,

Has anyone ever used Birchwood Casey Plumb Brown? Is it a good product? I was wondering how the wear was in the long run and also is it easy to apply the finish?

I would also entertain any other product suggestions.

It's actually my favorite product of the Birchwood Casey line. Excellent durability and color when done right. Experiment a little first before doing the entire project, to fine tune the results.

For a darker finish, steam it when applied. It won't be brown, though, more of a rust blue or black.

I've used it for muzzleloader barrels since the early '80s. It's pretty durable and maintains a nice finish for years. Seams to age darken just a bit which looks nice.

I'm more a fan of traditionally rust browning parts with something like Laurel Mountain Forge, but your mileage may vary. I also prefer a slightly stippled or micro-pitted surface on browned guns, which you can do by leavign he solution on longer.

The Plumb Brown will do more than a micro-pitted surface if you let it work long enough! It's not like their cold blue nastiness at all.
