Whale oil beef hooked! A breakthrough, I can see again ...

Sorry newfies lol for the swearing and I know I must look like an extra from a certain science fiction movie, but its been an amazing discovery.Probably the biggest dampener on my shooting in the last few years has been the lack of sharp focus in my vision, I have to use reading glasses now, about average in strength, and it's really affected my shooting. Stock sights like the no1mk3 are out of the question for target shooting, and even the no4 type isn't easy either.

I bought these gimmick glasses from a chinese $2 shop a few months ago, they're promoted as being for strengthening ones eyesight and eventually getting rid of your glasses one day. But...I just tried them out over the top of a couple of rifles, one with stock no1 mk3 sights, and one with a PH5A ,and incredibly the rear sight and front sights are in sharp focus, with the far away target also in either sharp focus or just slightly soft focus. The last time I saw rifle sights so clearly and in simultaneous sharp focus I was 15 years old. I can't wait to try this out at the range, and just had to pass this potentially great news along.
I know they cut a bit of brightness down, so a bright sunny day is going to be ideal, and with the PH5A sight also being a little aperture to look through, very similar to the glasses, its not quite as easy to get a good sight picture as with open stock sights, I had to move my head around to get some of the peep holes to line up.

I know that aperture sights are supposed to have the same effect but I don't get the same clarity or sharpness I just did, at last I have an option to shooting with scopes and I'm really happy it looks like I can get my stock sighted rifles out again. Yahoo.

Anyone else can verify?

Sounds cool. I can't wait to hear how they work at the range. I don't really have any problem with No4 sights yet, but i had to buy reading glasses a few months ago.

Speaking as someone who has to keep his glasses on a string round the neck, to prevent them getting lost - yes those things do work, as a quick fix. But you will have great difficulty in using them with a scope - I find the alignment is well-nigh impossible. After all, in the end you can only focus through one of those holes!

Real shooting glasses, with an adjustable iris attached, are a much better solution - but cost more than a couple of dollars!

Interesting, I have recently decided to get back into shooting and found my eyesight has deteriorated since I shelved everything. I can't see aperture or leaf sights clearly. I might have a look for something like these and see how it goes.

RJW, I assume the image is seen through just one of the holes - your eye selecting the one which lines up best? So it is really an array of single pinholes, rather than an image being assembled through all holes - or am I wrong?

I had to go to scopes years ago. I may be too far gone for anything short of a miracle. I do miss the iron sights, they were fun to use and for me less demanding than a scope. Bigger fun factor with the irons. I am thankful for the S-K Brit mounts. They keep my Enfields shooting!

I've been back this morning to make sure I'm seeing it rightly, and sure enough, the view over iron sights is fabulous. In detail it does appear that the best image shows through a single pin hole but the overall effect with all the others around is of a fairly normal field of view. Its a bit more tricky with aperture sights but does work similarly. I don't know why but aperture sights, that should work as well on the same principle, still seem to give me slightly out of focus views at the range.

I'll be interested to hear of anyone elses experiences with them. I think I'll go back a buy a couple more, they're cheap and its the first time I've seem them for sale anywhere.

Looks like an inexpensive nose mounted iris. Some shooting stores (Creedmore, etc) have adjustable irises for mounting on the back sight, and also high end glasses with an iris in the lens. Worth a look.
