M1 safety with the tip broken off?

Now, here's a question. I have seen M1icon's with the safety having the tip broken off (to allow the safety to engage with the hammer cocked or no).
    Was this a field modification?

On another sight members chimed in with having seen this on Greek and Danishicon returned rifles.
Was this a field modification or just reusing a damaged part?

I think it's just broken. Wouldn't pass USGI inspection, but who knows about the Greek maintenance program?

So it would appear that it is just a fairly common break during foreign service?

That was what would go wrong with the safety. Then you replace it.
