SUpposed 1903-A1 Marine Corps rifle on GunBroker.com

Hello All,

This is for the experts as well as everyone. Found this 1903A1 on Gunbroker....1903A1 S/N 1519828....Barrel SA 9-40 mounted in pRe-War C stock. Auction has ended, but will probably replist.

Seller states, in replies to my emails:

"Late in 1940 the USMC placed an order for M1903 barrels with Springfield Armory, 1940 barrels are rarely seen, they are desired by 03 collectors, if you are looking for a high number receiver with a good barrel to shoot, this is not the rifle, it is well used. The C stock makes it a real nice combination, refered to by collectors as a 1903-A1, selling price is $2,000 reserve price is $2,500."

Also......."I have the paper work that the Marines order and received a small lot of 1940 barrels, these documents came directly from Springfield/Marine Corps archives. The fact that the rifle is a M1903-A1 justifies the price, and the fact that a 1940 barrel is quite scarce, they did in fact exist and the Marine Corps used them. The last year 03 receivers were made was 1939. "

Is this a reality about the Marine Corps ordering rifles? Even with the C stock and documentation, is the $2,000 - $2,500 price justified? Additional information about this would be appreciated.

I checked the auction and noticed it had been halted.

I can't speak for the 1940 barrel story (although I admit I don't see them very often) - perhaps John Beard can comment. I don't see any other USMC characteristics to the rifle, though.

First off why did he not place the expiation in the auction write up??
All he writes is " for more information and selling price, please email".

I would not buy from him as it looks as if he is trying to hide something. It is fine to speculate about the barrel, but why not put it in the ad.

The barrel part is true to my knowledge.

The barrel is the real deal. But the whole story seems difficult to swallow. I would not want to pay that kind of money.
