Have seen several sights modified to convert them from peep to V sights. Looks like someone started the conversion on yours but got interrupted.

Whoever did it couldn't even hack-saw straight. HE clearly wasn't even going to use it as a centre-line guide because it's offset. We'd call it a bodge or as you colonials say '.....a bubba'. Is it by any chance an Indian No5?

I wonder if the battle sight had been damaged and the cut was made during attempts to straighten it back to it's original shape? The lower cut seems to rule it out- but who knows? Drunk at the time???
A skilled welder could fix that- and a slightly less skilled one will finish what Bubba started!

Possibly someone's attempt to get a lower zero at close range? Someone who was not really familiar with the concept of a rear peep sight? Who knows what goes on the mind of Bubba and his worldwide Apprentices!
The good news is that there seems to be replacement sights available. Not as common as the No. 4 sights, but not really rare either.

She's not an Indian...a Faz (T387). The cut looks pretty modern compared to the date of the rifle, the bottom groove is still nice and shiny. Any spare no.5 rear sights lying around Brian? I'll take this one and hang it off the rear view mirror on the Jeep.

My 2 cents = bubba wanted a slotted rear sight to put the front post into, like a handgun, but had to cut down through the top with the hack saw to get in there to make the slot. If that rear battle sight is set for 300 yards, a cut like that would give a 100 yard sight that was always ready to go when hunting, instead of having to stop and lift the whole sight up and then find the tiny thing pre set for 100.
